Van Gogh De Roze Boomgaard Folding Umbrella — van Gogh’s brushwork covers the canopy — the De Roze Boomgaard design rendered in thick visible strokes, printed on both the outer and inner faces. Printing both faces costs more and is worth it: an umbrella spends most of its working life being looked up into by the person holding it.

The canopy is 100% polyester with a multi-step water-repellent finish, so rain beads and shakes off rather than soaking in. It runs 15cm wider than a standard folding umbrella, which is the difference between staying dry and nearly staying dry. Closed, it measures around 30cm and slips into a bag pocket without a case; open, the canopy clears a shoulder bag as well as a head, which is what the extra width is for. The shaft is aluminium with fibreglass ribs, so it stays light without going flimsy.

Eight ribs, fibreglass reinforcement and hardened stretchers give it real wind resistance, and the auto-open button means you can get it up while holding a coffee. It folds compact for travel. Folded it is short enough to stand upright in a backpack pocket, which is the difference between carrying one and leaving it by the door.

It gives well to a commuter, a traveller, or anyone whose current umbrella is the free one from a conference. The canopy dries quickly once shaken, and the frame is designed to be re-tensioned by hand if a gust turns it inside out.
