Every design here rests on the same idea: an animal doing something entirely human, drawn with the care a serious pet portrait would get, and never once winking at the viewer. A dog in reading glasses with the newspaper open. A cat in sunglasses reclining in the foam. An emu balancing a toilet roll on its head against blue tiled brick.
The straight face is the whole technique. The coat is rendered properly, the light falls honestly, and the breed’s own features do the acting — a Schnauzer’s eyebrows arrange themselves above the frames into genuine disapproval, a Shiba looks over the top of its spectacles rather than through them, a Scottish Fold has no ears to hook a pair of glasses over and has to balance them on its nose instead. The moment a design explains itself the joke dies, so none of them do.
Finished and framed, they belong in the room they depict. A downstairs cloakroom is the natural home — a small wall, seen close up, by somebody who did not expect to be looked at over the top of a broadsheet. They are also the most reliable gift in the shop, because the recipient’s own breed is almost certainly in here somewhere.
