Which breed you choose decides how hard it will be. A Doberman is a near-black field where the same rust markings repeat in the same positions on every dog. Great Pyrenees is white on white on white, with only soft shadow between one coat and the next. Beagles and Bernese look navigable because the markings are bold — until you notice every dog wears them identically. The colourful French Bulldogs are the one design that shows any mercy at all.
The pleasure is that they work as pattern. Framed, a wall of Corgi ears has a bouncing rhythm to it; a field of Poodle curls reads as clipped topiary; the merle Australian Shepherds become a mottled abstract of grey and rust that only resolves into dogs as you walk toward it. Bought for the breed, kept for the picture.
